How It Works
A walkthrough of BogeyHunter Mobile — from first launch to the 18th green
Two coaching modes, one coach: Course Mode for on-course voice coaching and Range Mode for swing analysis at the range. Set up your clubs in My Bag and Coach Mulligan uses your actual distances for every recommendation.
First Launch — Onboarding
When you open BogeyHunter for the first time:
- Set up your profile: name, handicap, typical miss pattern
- Build your bag: select your clubs and enter your average carry distance for each
- Download the coach: Coach Mulligan's AI model downloads once (~2GB). It's encrypted and runs entirely on your device.
After setup, everything runs locally. No internet needed during play.
Course Mode — Voice Caddie
Course Mode is your on-course companion. Here's the flow:
Starting a Round
- Open Course Mode — the app detects your course via GPS from 11,500+ bundled US courses
- If GPS is unavailable, manually select a course
- Hole-by-hole data loads: par, yardage, layout
On the Course
- Ask for distance: "How far am I?" — Coach Mulligan tells you the distance to the green
- Ask for a club: "I'm 162 out, 10mph headwind" — Coach Mulligan calculates the effective distance using your carry numbers and recommends a specific club
- Ask for strategy: "Should I lay up here?" — Coach Mulligan factors in the hole layout, your distances, and your skill level
- Track your score: enter scores hole-by-hole for round history
Voice Interaction
Coach Mulligan is designed to be used hands-free:
- Hold to speak in the app, or use your AirPods/Bluetooth media button
- Speech recognition happens on-device — no audio leaves your phone
- Coach Mulligan responds through your AirPods with spoken coaching
- Your phone can stay in your pocket the entire round
Range Mode — Swing Analysis
Range Mode turns your iPhone into a swing analysis station with over 20 biomechanical metrics:
Setup
- Mount your iPhone on a tripod, 6-10 feet away
- Choose face-on or down-the-line angle
- Tap Start Session and walk to your hitting position
- A chime plays when the system detects you and is ready
Capture
- Auto-detect: stand still at address, the app detects your swing and captures automatically
- Apple Watch: wrist accelerometer detects impact and triggers capture from your wrist
- Manual: walk to the phone and tap the capture button
- Audio cues confirm everything — chime when ready, beep when captured. No need to watch the screen.
- Hit as many balls as you like. Each swing is captured individually.
Analysis
- Live skeleton overlay shows body tracking in real time during capture
- Spatial pose analysis extracts over 20 metrics: hip rotation, shoulder turn, X-factor, tempo, spine angle, hand position, and more
- Hand pose tracking measures wrist bow and cup at key swing positions
- Coach Mulligan delivers feedback based on the same coaching methodology as the desktop platform
- AirPods head tracking adds additional motion data for head stability coaching
Session Summary
- When you end a session, a summary shows your swing count, average tempo, and most common issues
- Sessions sync with your desktop for deeper analysis with the full multi-camera system
My Bag — Club Management
Your bag is the foundation for accurate club recommendations:
- Add up to 14 clubs (USGA limit) from the built-in club catalog
- Set your average carry distance for each club — this is what Coach Mulligan uses
- Configure loft, lie angle, bounce (wedges), shaft flex, and club length
- Update distances as your game improves
When you ask "What should I hit?", Coach Mulligan uses your actual carry distances, adjusts for wind, and recommends the right club.
AirPods & Bluetooth Setup
BogeyHunter uses standard Bluetooth audio routing with bonus features for AirPods:
- Connect your AirPods, Beats, or any Bluetooth headphone normally through iOS Settings
- The app routes speech output to your connected audio device automatically
- Media button integration: use the AirPods stem tap or headphone media button to activate voice input
- If no Bluetooth audio is connected, speech plays through the phone speaker
- AirPods Pro, AirPods 3rd gen, AirPods Max, Beats Fit Pro: head rotation tracking activates automatically — detects "head up" faults and adds motion data to your coaching context
Round History
After each round, your scores and hole-by-hole data are saved locally:
- Browse past rounds in Settings → Round History
- See scores, holes played, and course information
- All data stored locally on your device
- Deleting the app removes all history permanently
